vanished

On 7 June, Spanish police received a phone call from a man claiming to know the whereabouts of Madeleine, using a mobile phone registered in Argentina. The call was described as "credible".

In June, Spanish investigative journalist Antonio Toscano claimed that the four-year-old was abducted by a French sex offender, as part of a Europe-wide paedophile network. Then, on 28 June, Toscano claimed that Madeleine was alive and well in Europe but Madeleine's parents refused to meet with him. Determined to leave no stone unturned, police also examined hundreds of reports from psychics and clairvoyants claiming to know the location of Madeleine. The police said that they decided to check them all in case they might contain a message from the kidnapper.

The investigation was thrown into confusion on 10 June when the detective coordinating the hunt, Gonçalo Amaral, head of the regional Polícia Judiciária, and four other Portuguese police officers, were charged with alleged offences relating to the inquiry into the disappearance of Joana Cipriano, from a village seven miles (11 km) from where Madeleine disappeared.

Maddie: The face of 2009

EXPERTS say this is how Madeleine McCann may look today – 20 months after she went missing.

This astonishing image was created for the Daily Star Sunday by forensic computer age-progression expert Jovey Mae Hayes.

Using the same techniques she employs for the FBI and American police forces in missing persons cases and kidnappings, she has aged Maddie’s face to reveal the way she looks now.

“Her face would be elongated, her chin would have become more pronounced and distinctive and her nose would be a bit bigger,” said Jovey Mae.

We asked her to show how Maddie now looks on the basis that she has been physically untouched since her disappearance from the holiday resort of Praia da Luz in Portugal on May 3, 2007.

Working from the photo taken shortly before she vanished – Jovey Mae’s image shows Maddie with a hint of a smile.

Hearts

“Even in the worst possible circumstances it would be impossible to imagine that her life today is totally bereft of even slight happiness,” the expert claimed.

Jovey Mae also revealed Maddie, who went missing just days before her fourth birthday, could be suffering from Stockholm syndrome.

This is defined by experts as “a psychological response sometimes seen in an abducted hostage in which the hostage shows signs of loyalty to the hostage-taker, regardless of the danger, or at least risk, in which they have been placed”.

The syndrome’s name was coined by psychiatrist and criminologist Nils Bejerot following a five-day bank siege in the Swedish capital in 1983.

Police were astonished that some hostages defended the armed robbers who had held them captive.

Jovey Mae said: “If Maddie has been abducted, she may have built a degree of trust in the person or people who are hold her, if they have treated her well. It is highly unlikely her life would be a total misery – hence the slight smile. This, at least, may be of some comfort to her parents and relatives.”

Appeal

The McCann family made a Christmas appeal for information about Maddie, releasing a video of her playing at their home in Rothley, Leicestershire at Christmas 2006.

Parents Kate and Gerry, both 40, have been delighted at the response, with calls from all over the world.

The couple spent Christmas at home with their twins Sean and Amelie, both three.

Municipal: Council decided last night

Gonçalo Amaral candidate in Olhão

Gonçalo Amaral is the candidate chosen by the PSD in Olhão concelhia to lead the list for this municipal year. The former coordinator of the PJ is the party's militant since 2002 and says he accepted the invitation by feel "need to intervene in society and political life."

In statements to CM, Gonçalo Amaral pointing to 'social intervention' as a priority of his agenda and does not fear a lack of experience in political vicissitude. 'I am a valid person, I have some skills and something to give,' said the CM. It is recalled that Gonçalo Amaral chose to unlink the PJ after, in October 2007, having been away from research to the disappearance of Madeleine McCann, on which was to write a book.

The decision was taken yesterday evening, at a meeting of concelhia policy of Olhão, which was scheduled for today. Concelhia's proposal will now be sent to the district policy committee, who decide it, but everything indicates that the name will be accepted.

Gonçalo Amaral will compete with the socialist Francisco Leal, the current chairman of the House, to meet his third term. The current edile not yet been presented as a candidate, but should take the challenge. The PSD-Algarve assumed as election timetable set by the end of this month to the chambers where the candidates now is opposition.

Amaral runs for president in Olhão

The ex-inspector of the Judicial Police Gonçalo Amaral is a great "letter-surprise" of the orange cards for the 2009 elections. Amaral confirms everything the Center of the Algarve, and explains why.

"While police did not fully exercise my rights, in terms of party limited me to vote, to go to vote because I believe that was not compatible with political activity that the activity performed. From the moment I left the police, have the fullness of my rights. There was an invitation and I accepted this invitation. It is a way to intervene in public life, "admits Gonçalo Amaral, PSD candidate for the municipality of Olhão.

Although at an early stage, Amaral shows that one of its main concerns is the social factor: "What is lacking Olhão? There is much poverty in Olhão, Olhão living fisheries and agriculture, not only cement or tar is happening in Olhão. We will develop a political program, there is much that is well made, there are others that are missing do, we do a survey of all contact with all organizations that exist in Olhão and try to evolve in the social, "says.

The ex-inspector of the Judicial Police admits that its public visibility may help to address the "history" of the PS, Francisco Leal, but will not be enough: "It was not necessary so much publicity, so much public image - that is more nationally - because I have family traveling from Fuzeta am not unknown in the municipality of Olhão, "he says.

"In addition, people can not be thinking that just because they have advertising earn a camera, can not be there. You must be a very Interventive, these months will be for that, we see the final result, but it will be important and will be interesting, let's see, "he adds.

As for political inexperience, Amaral does not hide that face Francisco Leal, president since 1993 (but in power since 1989, as councilman to replace the president) will not be easy, but recalls that in politics there is not impossible: "Politically, it is very more experience than me, but it is not a negative factor because people who are with me are people with much experience in politics and know very well the municipal and political life of Olhão, "concludes, it is militant since 2002.

For now, however, the team is not yet defined.

Application came from above

The Center of the Algarve know that the name of Amaral was suggested by the leader of the district, Mendes Bota, and was welcomed at a policy committee meeting county, held last night.

The district has already Gonçalo Amaral had in mind for other counties, but some already had applications or commitments. "When Dr. Mendes Bota knew that Dr. Gonçalo Amaral had family in Olhão, and there was no commitments, Olhão emerged as a natural choice," admitted the source of OA county.

Contacted by the Center of the Algarve, Mendes Bota not want to dwell on comments, justifying that the application has not yet been officially approved by the District of PSD. Bota admits, however, that all choices of concelhias are "followed closely" by the party district.

Already the chairman of the municipality of Olhão, Daniel Santana, confirmed the decision and believes that the profile of Amaral is the most appropriate, among other choices that appeared: "He's willing to do the fighting and work for the opposition to embodies the PSD in Olhão, "he says.

"In addition, he was inspector of the Judicial Police and that brings us credibility, on the other hand if Maddie was wronged and I think that people realize that when he tried to do the real justice withdrew from the process," concludes.

Former English lawyer counts on ex-Pj inspector
Amaral strikes again against the McCann

One British has a foundation that exists to tell the true story of Madeleine McCann. And he wants the McCann accused of negligence.

Gonçalo Amaral will be called to testify in England in a process about the Madeleine case. A new foundation with the name of Madeleine pretends to re-open the process with the intention of finding the answers to what happened to the older daughter of the McCann. “When that happens Amaral will be a key-witness” said to the 24 Horas Anthony Bennett, a retired lawyer that is the maximum responsible for the foundation that was created after the former coordinator of Policia Judiciária published his book “Maddie, the Truth of the Lie”.

The Foundation has edited its own book, called “What really happened to Madeleine McCann – 60 reasons that suggest the girl was not kidnapped” and it is sold in England for 7 euros.

Gonçalo Amaral has been contacted in order to clarify the legal reasons that could involve a possible re-opening of the process in England. “It will be more difficult to re-open the case ove here. But in England , contrary to what has been said alleging that the Courts have no jurisdiction about the case, it is possible that might happen”, explained Amaral to the 24 horas., claryfing that it is a question of International Law. “The little girl is English, the parents are English and they live there”.

To prove negligence.

One of Amaral’s aims is to prove there was negligence of the couple in what concerns the care for the girl. For that reason it is going on in England, through the site of the foundation, a petition that pretends to see the criminalization the act of “leaving alone at home a child under 12 years of age”. Afterwards is only to prove that the McCann were negligent when they left their 3 children unguarded”.

The foundation does not exist to raise funds to look for Madeleine, but shares the point of view of Amaral, that defends that the child died in Praia da Luz. The foundation has caused the rage of the McCann that advanced with a process against the use of the name Madeleine.

_______________________________________________

SMALL NOTES:

Amaral is about to start a political career but he is still connected with the case that brought him to the stages.

MOITA: Gançalo Amaral is not the first PJ inspector that goes into a race for “mayor” (autarca). Moita Flores has already done it and won for Santarém, by the PSD. Meanwhile, Moita reveals that has been contacted… by the PS, to recandidate again to the place. “There have been conversations”, he told the newspaper “Mirante”.

He wants to change the city of Olhão
Gonçalo Amaral may be the candidate by the PSD to be Mayor of Olhão, running against the actual socialist president Francisco Leal. That only became possible because he is retired from the PJ, which happened in the sequence of Madeleine’s case. Amaral is a member of the PSD for 7 years, but he says that he “voted for the PSD long ago”. He is going to keep doing in politics what he did with the police. “I shall continue to worry about the people, with their well-being, with understanding why they act in a certain manner”, said to 24 Horas. Amaral believes in a victory because “people like to change when there is a lot to do” and he speaks about Olhão as one of the poorest regions in the country.

This man wants to frame the McCanns

Anthony Bennett has decided to condemn Maddie's parents

He launched a foundation practically on his own and says that he doesnt lack the will to discover the whole truth about Maddies death. Anthony Bennett wont rest until he doesnt seat Gerry and Kate on the defendants bench. Gonçalo Amaral was his inspiration

His name is Anthony Bennett, he is British, aged 61, a lawyer of profession, and since last October he has launched a veritable crusade against the parents of Madeleine McCann. His purpose is, as he himself admits without reservations, to manage to collect enough evidence for the Justice of his country to open a process against the McCanns, holding them responsible over the death of their daughter.

Anthony Bennetts showcase is the Madeleine Foundation, of which he is the main face. And one of its main inspirations is former Polícia Judiciária inspector Gonçalo Amaral as 24Horas reported in yesterdays edition.

We share the point of view that is expressed in his book The Truth of the Lie that the McCanns were responsible for Madeleines death and that, with the help of friends, they concealed her body, the Foundation refers in the opening page of their internet site. We want to take them to court, Bennett confirms in statements to our newspaper.

Anthony Bennett launched the Foundation in October. He swiftly mobilised several people who share his cause, and he even found the time to launch a book with his theories. But the resources are scarce and so are his travelling companions.

We have approximately 20 associates, most of them British, who pay a fee of 10 pounds [11 euros] and who may, if they so desire, offer donations up to 600 pounds [662 euros], Bennett describes to 24Horas. We also accept money from non-members, but not over 20 pounds [22 euros] per person.

The present budget, according to his most recent calculations, is of approximately 200 euros. This is easily explained: we spent almost everything that we had in printing the book, he justifies.

He was connected to politics

Anthony Bennett is a known person in Great Britain. He has been participating in public life for over 30 years and he has had relevant political connections.

He started out by being a candidate in several legislative elections as an independent in the lists of the Labour Party (centre left positioned). But he slowly drifted away from Labour, towards the right. He even ended up becoming one of the main faces of UKIP, a right-wing party that is clearly anti European and populist.

In 2004, he ventured out to found a political force, Veritas, and he is one of the most active voices against immigration on British soil. And he didnt hide the fact that one of his main inspirations was Ian Anderson, the leader of the National Front, a party that declares itself as the extreme right wing and with xenophobic positions.

Nevertheless, Anthony Bennett says that politics is part of the past: I abandoned it in 2005 and I havent had any intervention since

Despite accusing the McCanns of being close to the Labour Party, Bennett asserts that he is not moved by ideological motives. What Im interested in is in finding the truth. Nothing else, he swears.

Anonymous email left clear message

He was threatened with death

An email put a prize on Anthony Bennetts head. The police was alerted but have yet to find those responsible. The lawyer has his own suspicions

The early days at the Madeleine Foundation werent easy. Anthony Bennett was even seriously threatened, confronted with an anonymous email that left him frightened.

This time you went too far. We know where you live and within two weeks there will be blood at your door and fallen people on your doorstep. You will be very lucky if you manage to survive. Thus read the electronic message that was dictated to us over the phone by Bennett himself, received in late October.

I'm convinced that it was sent by fervent supporters of the McCann couple. I just dont know exactly by whom, the British lawyer told 24Horas.

The case was immediately presented to the police authorities, that havent managed to discover who sent the email yet. But from the outset, the authorities warned Bennett to be careful: They even offered me protection, which I refused because I didnt deem it necessary.

Another measure that was taken by the police was the interception of all phone calls that were made to the Foundation and to the mobile phones of its main members. The intention is to immediately detect anyone who calls to scare Anthony Bennett and the collaborators which hasnt happened until now. They placed the phones under surveillance in order to prevent a possible incident, Anthony Bennett specified.

Despite the initial confusion, Bennett says that recently he has been living tranquil times. And that he hopes not to have to repeat such an agonising experience. I confess that I was somewhat afraid, he says.

For the attention of the government

The Madeleine Foundation has its offices in Harlow, Essex. But it is through its internet site that most of its initiatives are developed and its main goals are publicised. For example, an online petition that is directed at prime minister Gordon Brown, counting with 556 signatures at the moment, requesting a law that criminalises anyone who leaves children under the age of 12 alone at home.

Polemic. Anthony Bennett was one of the main instigators of a curious campaign that was carried out in Great Britain in 2001. He was the face of the British who opposed the adoption of the metric system on Her Majestys soil. In order to make their discontent very clear, he went as far as pulling out some road signs. His enthusiasm came at a cost, and he was condemned in court over public disturbances, condemned six times over and forced to deliver communitarian services.

McCanns irritated when they hear about Bennett

We don't want to give that gentleman any exposure.

The main target of Anthony Bennett and of his foundation is the McCann couple. The friction began at an early stage, as soon as the lawyers intention to gather enough evidence in order for Gerry and Kate to be sued for neglecting their children while on holidays in Portugal, in May 2007, was known.

Bennett himself acknowledges that he was contacted by persons close to the McCanns in October, when the Foundation was made public on the internet. The family's spokesman, Clarence Mitchell, threatened to sue me because he understood that I might induce those who want to give their donation to the campaigns that search for Madeleine, into error. And he said that he would watch our activities. He have already sent their lawyers a letter clarifying that we do not want any misunderstandings, but we haven't received a reply until now, Anthony Bennett tells 24Horas.

Threats that went no further than that, at least not until now. Clarence Mitchell himself confirms to our newspaper that he spoke with Bennett and that he told him about his displeasure. If he insists on acting in the manner in which he has acted until now, it's likely that he will become the target of a lawsuit from us. Lets see what happens from now on, Mitchell advanced.

Gerry and Kates spokesman prefers not to make any further comment on the activities of the Madeleine Foundation and of its main mentor, directing any further information towards Maddies parents lawyer. It is only him who can say anything further about the matter. Me and the McCanns, we dont want to give this gentlemans activities any further exposure, he said.

Throughout the day, yesterday, 24Horas tried to contact Adam Tudor, who has an office in London, several times. Until the time at which this edition was closed, we failed to obtain any reply to our solicitations for a contact.

Alert. Clarence Mitchell, the McCann familys spokesman, asserted to 24Horas that he is on top of everything that is being done by the Madeleine Foundation. We're ready for action, he warned.

Cooperation. Gonçalo Amaral recognizes that he was already contacted by Anthony Bennett. We spoke several times through the internet. This is a friendly cooperation, he hasnt paid me and I dont wish to be paid, the former Judiciária inspector told 24Horas.

Silence. Gerry and Kate McCann havent said a word yet to comment on the Madeleine Foundation. All their public positions on the subject are publicly assumed by their all-time spokesman, Clarence Mitchell.

McCanns demand apology over Madeleine costume

Young Tory dressed as missing Madeleine

A leading young Tory activist was expelled from the party today for boasting about dressing up as Madeleine McCann at a New Year bash.

Conservative Future (CF) member Matthew Lewis wrote on his Facebook site that his costume would include a blonde wig, pink pyjamas, a teddy bear and a vial of fake blood.

Other figures from the organisation joined in the joke about the missing five-year-old, with one responding: Is this a cunning (Baldrick style) plan to obtain the reward money?

Tory chairman Caroline Spelman today branded Mr Lewis's behaviour "totally unacceptable", indicating that moves were under way to eject him.

This offensive behaviour is not only shocking but intolerable and completely unacceptable, she said. There is no place for this sort of person in the party.

Mr Lewis - believed to be in his early 20s and a student at Queen Mary, University of London - resigned as chairman of Staffordshire CF last month in protest at internal reforms. Images on the groups website show him campaigning with David Cameron for last years Crewe and Nantwich by-election.

Mr Lewis was not answering his mobile phone this afternoon, but most of the exchanges were still visible on his Facebook profile. Page snapshots showing other comments were featured on the Tory Bear blog.

On New Years Day, after the party, Mr Lewis told another CF member, Flick Cox, online: "There was a brief moment when I thought I might have gone too far with elements of the costume, but it was ok".

He added that another guest at the party was dressed as Baby P, the toddler who died after a catalogue of horrific abuse.

"There may not be photos, I don't think anyone wants to risk being associated with them!" Mr Lewis went on.

Ms Cox suggested that he may have "pulled a Prince Harry" - a reference to the royal's controversial decision to wear a Nazi uniform to a fancy dress party in 2005.

She said she would "hate to have to end our friendship when I become an MP" if he got into trouble over the fancy dress outfit.

Madeleine McCann went missing while on holiday with her family in Portugal in May 2007. She has yet to be found despite a massive worldwide hunt.

Maddie: Watch out for forgeries...

The British press in general published a newspiece today, the 9th of January 2009, which was forcefully bombastic: a young Tory, a member of the British Conservative and Unionist Party, was expelled from said party over allegedly “offensive behaviour [that] is not only shocking but intolerable and completely unacceptable”. Adding to these words from the President of the Party, Caroline Spelman, Clarence Mitchell states that the young Conservative activist’s behaviour is beyond any limit of what is credible and acceptable, and, as expected, demands private and public apologies to the McCann couple due to the fact that he considers it to be “a complete disgrace that Madeleine's name and image should be made fun of in this way”.

Well! What did young Matthew Lewis do, after all?

He published a note in his Facebook where he boasts about “dressing up” as Madeleine McCann, using a blonde wig, “pink pyjamas, a teddy bear and a vial of fake blood”. This is the unacceptable behaviour that led to the expulsion of this young man!!! At some point on the page, the comment from a friend can be read who says he is going to dress up as Natasha Campush (the German girl who lived in captivity in an underground bunker for 7 years, after being abducted), to which, I stress, young Matthew replied: “At least yours has a happy ending”. Please allow me to underline this reply: “At least yours has a happy ending”. But let me also point your attention towards the fact that at the same party there were, allegedly, “disguises” of Baby P (the baby that died a victim of severe abuse) which everyone agrees had a painful ending, and a very, very unhappy one, I want to add!

Well! Within a benign interpretation of the events, one might say: jokes in bad taste, by youngsters during a night when excesses “fuel the party”. But young Matthew ends up confessing, in a comment on the same Facebook that at a certain point in time, he felt that certain elements of his “disguise” were abusive, or, at least, he sensed that he had gone too far with elements of the costume.

The other interpretation, not quite as benign, we already know it, through the statements made by the President of the Party, with the full assent from Clarence Mitchell. Inadvertently, the young man almost attained a historical feat within English politics: an agreement between Labour and Conservatives. Forgive me for not resisting this joke, as well. Whether in good or in bad taste, you’ll be the judge.

But there is one thing that I agree upon. The young former Unionist member went too far with some details. Before anything else, I must refer that stating that Maddie’s pyjamas were pink is a plagiarism of Mrs Jane Tanner’s statement. Let’s see if we won’t soon see a lawsuit from her against him. This is because Mrs Jane Tanner is absolutely certain, just like me and every one of us, that Madeleine had pink pyjamas. Why do I say this? Because in her statement, that prompted the second photofit, she had already seen the photograph of one of Maddie’s pyjamas published in the media. Mrs Jane Tanner did, and everyone else. Alas, young Matthew must be confused, because the pyjamas (the ones on the photo) actually have pink teddy bears and white lace cuffs. Which leads us to another question: the pink teddy bear. It was not really a teddy bear, but rather a pink cuddle cat, which I never managed to perceive whether it belonged to Maddie or to her mother, Kate. We have to be more precise, dear Matthew. But, finally, and worse, a vial of false blood. Negative, dear Matthew. It was no vial, but only a few drops, and as far as many investigators are concerned, they were not fake, with very strong probabilities of constituting a sample of real blood, from the real Maddie.

Unfortunately, my dear Matthew, where you seem to have surpassed the boundaries was in the comment that you made about the alleged happy ending of Natasha Campush. Do you know why? Because that means that Maddie had an… unhappy ending.

You know, Matthew? If you had dressed up as Maddie and, with a smile, stated – “Mom? Dad? I’m back” – maybe you would not have been that vilified. Look at what Mrs Jovey Mae Hayes did. Do learn from her! That lady opportunely offered the supporters of the abduction theory, at Christmas time, a simulation (failing to present any methodological criteria for said age progression, and taking refuge, once more, in a false affiliation with the FBI) of a portrait of Maddie in 2009. The Portrait shows a smiling Maddie, transmitting the hope that she is alive, and in good health, despite subject to Stockholm syndrome (Prof. Nils Berjerot, please forgive the incommensurable ignorance). This lady, the director of a firm that works in the area of photograph manipulation, found an interesting and opportune manner to use the little girl’s image, in an execrable way, in order to pursue what I have been denouncing as Relational Marketing.

Do you see, Matthew? Ah, youth…

Maybe you should stick to selling a few t-shirts and wristbands with Madeleine’s name on. It seems that does not constitute any sort of abuse. Even her parents do it. Of course they do it with the intent to gather more financial means to proceed their relentless search for their… lost daughter.

Watch out for forgeries…

You must excuse me but I can’t say anything further today. One of these days, in an attempt to demonstrate why things that frequently happen to couples that lose their children don’t happen with the McCanns, I’ll write about sacrificial dilemmas and I’ll recommend the movie: “Sophie’s choice”.

Pinto Monteiro – That with the strange noises was the thing that was most reported by the media. Let me make a radical statement to you: everything that I said in the media until this day are serious statements from a serious ‘Beirão’ [native of Beiras, a region of Portugal]. There is no one who can demonstrate that everything that I have said is not true. It’s evident that what I said was a call for attention, which the Attorney General can make, upon the abuse of wiretappings.

António Ribeiro Ferreira [ARF] – Abuse.

- Yes. Wiretappings have to exist. There are certain type of crimes that cannot be solved without wiretappings. But wiretappings have to be authorised by a judge. Have you seen any cases of abuse of wiretappings, or haven’t you? Look, as recently as this week the newspapers report that a PJ agent was punished with one and a half year of suspension, among other things, because of wiretappings. That there was illegal wiretapping in Portugal, there was indeed.

ARF – Does it still exist?

- Probably. And then I’m told: why doesn’t the Attorney General control them? I have no way of controlling them.

ARF – The technological means are so sophisticated, it is impossible to control them, isn’t it?

- It’s impossible. Anyway, I changed my mobile phone and this year the Government gave the Attorney General’s Office a budget to improve the phone network. Therefore, I think we’re on the right path.

The Freeport case

ARF – But there’s a delicate case that has been in the newspapers, that involves the English police, concerning the Freeport business. They say that the English police suspects a Portuguese politician, with high amounts of money circulating through fiscal paradises. How is that process evolving? Will it all burst in 2009, the year of all elections?

- I’ll reply with the same frankness. The Freeport process is a process that has been dragging on for quite a while. Concerning that process, I summoned the lady prosecutor who was in charge of the case and she told me that the process was stalled at the Judiciária, waiting for a test that was always delayed. Well. I told the lady prosecutor to give them a deadline, a reasonable one, we insisted, and the process remained stalled. So I avoked the process, just like I did with the Lisbon Municipality and the football, the ‘Golden Whistle’.

ARF – You avoked the process.

- I avoked the process. And the process passes to the DCIAP [Central Department for Penal Action and Investigation] which is the entity that is competent for that. Well. The Freeport process is at a phase where we have a rogatory that was sent to England since 2005 which the English have not carried out yet. Don’t ask me why because I don’t know. The English justice is very swift sometimes, sometimes it’s not swift at all. Vale e Azevedo should be in Portugal already. He should be here already. He’s not. He’s not yet. Let’s see when he comes.

ARF – If he comes.

- I think yes, he’ll come. But let’s see when he does. He has a few years to spend in prison, that’s only why. He may have the best lawyers in the world but he has a few years to spend in prison. He has. That is not even an issue for the prosecutor, it’s an issue for the judges who condemned him.

ARF – Exactly.

- In the Freeport case, there is a rogatory yet to be carried out. Meanwhile, we decided, in order to try to unblock a series of situations, to organise a meeting here between the director of the DCIAP and a vice-director of the PJ and two or three persons from the team that went to The Hague to meet the English police. Because the English police, on their side, also has a rogatory letter that wanted to send. So, they went there with the support of Eurojust, which is an entity that theoretically is destined to do that, and I’m waiting for the results of that meeting. Now, the political speculations at this point in time are mere speculations. I have to say it very clearly. Don’t ask me what is going to happen tomorrow, the day after tomorrow, because tests are being carried out, the rogatories have not been carried out, the English are going to send elements over, I hope they do, we’ve been waiting for three years, we’re going to send them elements. Now, at this point in time anything that involves politicians is nothing more than mere political speculation.

The Madeleine McCann case

ARF – We’re talking about Dr Bexiga, who is now an administrator at CP.

- There seems to be no doubt that was because of football. Until now it was not possible to establish who did it. These processes are never closed. I take the opportunity to say this. Just like the Maddie case. They are not closed. The Maddie process was archived concerning those arguidos. Every once in a while I receive letters, sometimes completely hallucinatory letters from a gentleman who was a medium, from another gentleman who is I don’t know what, I always send them, with a little card saying that although I don’t believe much in mediums, here goes anyway. The process is always susceptible of being opened. This case of the town councillor is open. For the time being, until now, as I use to say, it was not possible to establish anything.

Letter: Your View- Sick Stunt

TORY activist Matt Lewis has been rightly axed by the party over his grossly offensive "joke" of going to afancy dress party dressed as Madeleine McCann.
How out of touch with public feelings and opinions is this man?
Excuse me for perhaps being a bit old-fashioned, but I was under the impression that people connected to a political party were supposed to have public interest uppermost in their mind.
Against this backdrop, the antics of Russell Brand and Jonathan Ross seem rather harmless in comparison.

Madeleine: Gerry MacCann in Portugal

In an exclusive interview to the agency Lusa, said Gerry McCann did not intend, at least for now, to promote any proceedings against the Portuguese or other entity, including media, stressing that the important thing is to forget the past and continue to try to find her daughter missing in the Algarve in 2007.

Madeleine McCann, then three years old, disappeared to 03 May 2007 of the room where I slept with the two twin brothers, younger, in an apartment in a tourist resort in Praia da Luz, district of Lagos, while the Algarve parents dinner in one nearby restaurant.

The 07 September of the same year, the child's mother, Kate, and father, Gerry McCann, were made defendants, after a further examination in DIC, but the 21 July 2008, the Attorney General's Office officially announced the closure research and archiving of the suspicions against Kate and Gerry McCann.

The PJ initially pointed to the possibility of abduction, but later admitted the death of the child, but authorities never managed to establish what really happened to Madeleine McCann.

Madeleine's father back in Portugal

Missing Madeleine McCann's father flew back to Portugal for the first time since returning to the UK.

Gerry McCann made the journey to meet his Portuguese lawyers to discuss what more could be done to help find his missing daughter, family spokesman Clarence Mitchell said.

It is understood that Mr McCann's wife Kate did not travel with him, and that he will not see any Portuguese officials during his short trip.

Mr Mitchell said: "I can confirm that Gerry McCann returned to Portugal for a brief visit to meet his lawyers to see what more can be done to help find his daughter."

Mr McCann, 40, from Rothley, Leicestershire, flew into Faro Airport in the Algarve and was met by British officials. He then travelled to Lisbon for talks with his legal team, led by Rogerio Alves.

Madeleine was nearly four when she went missing from her family's holiday apartment in the Algarve village of Praia da Luz on May 3 2007 while her parents dined with friends nearby.

Despite a massive police operation and huge publicity worldwide, she has not been found. Four months after she disappeared, Portuguese police made both Mr and Mrs McCann "arguidos", or formal suspects, in the case.

Two days later, on September 9 2007, they returned to Britain with their two other children, twins Sean and Amelie.

Last July the Portuguese attorney-general shelved the investigation and lifted the arguido status of Mr and Mrs McCann.

The couple insist they will continue to believe Madeleine is still alive until presented with firm evidence to the contrary, and have vowed to keep looking for her for as long as it takes.

The father of Madeleine McCann expressed this Tuesday, the intention to cooperate with the Portuguese authorities in the search of his daughter, disappeared in the Algarve in May 2007, believing that there are steps that can still be made in research.

"We think there is a very good chance of Maddie still be found alive and in good health and therefore we want the search continues. We want to emphasize our desire to work with the authorities as much as possible, 'said Gerry McCann, who arrived this Tuesday to Portugal for a brief visit of only two days.

In an interview with Lusa, Maddie's father said he now returned to Portugal for the first time since September 2007, when it was formed together with the accused woman, to discuss with his lawyer, Rogerio Alves, the best way to collaborate with the Portuguese authorities to "explore steps that have not yet been taken and that could make a difference."

Gerry may return as early as February

For this, said it is important to analyze the process and all the research so far 'not to duplicate that steps have been taken "and also" not to waste resources.

"It is the first visit to Portugal, but I hope it is the first of many over the coming months (¿) The objective is to see what can still be done in the search for Maddie ', said, ahead that could return as early as February.

According to Gerry McCann, the British police and police from several other countries continue to receive "information from different sources" about what has happened to Madeleine, as well as reports of "possible sightings.

Processes? For now, no

"Like all parents of missing children, we want any information being investigated, said the father of Maddie, who today met with his lawyer and also with representatives of the British embassy in Portugal.

Gerry McCann said has not intention, at least for now, to proceed with court proceedings against the Portuguese or any other entity, including media, stressing want to 'move forward and not backwards. "

"I want to make completely clear that what happened in the past already there and we will make us much as can still be done to continue the search. That is our priority and always has been. So, these things [possible prosecution] are just not relevant now, 'said.

Kate and Gerry McCann

During the last few months of 2007 we, along with much of the media, published a number of articles which may have been understood to suggest that Kate and Gerry McCann may have been involved in Madeleine's disappearance. We regret this and wish to make clear, for the avoidance of any doubt, that we fully accept that there is no evidence whatsoever to suggest that Kate and Gerry were involved in the disappearance of their daughter.

(...)

Therefore we are today calling on Evening Standard readers to redouble their efforts to find Madeleine. We have now made a very substantial donation to assist with the search and are continuing to run adverts in the foreign editions of our sister paper, the Daily Mail, asking for information which might lead to Madeleine being found.

Gerry McCann: The circus rolls back into town
Return: One and a half year later

by: Tânia Laranjo/Sónia Trigueirão

Almost one and a half year after leaving Portugal in a hurry 48 hours after having been made an arguido Gerry McCann returned. He was at the English embassy yesterday, in the Estrela area, in Lisbon, to ask for help to restart the searches for his daughter.

Nevertheless, Gerry McCann didnt contest the archiving of the process. He could have requested the opening of the instruction phase given the fact he had a legitimate interest which he didn't do within the legal deadline. The result: in terms of the process, its practically impossible for the authorities to restart the searches into the little girl's whereabouts, unless Maddies parents supply a new solid element concerning what really happened to the child.

Gerry wanted to know about the possibilities to continue to search for his daughter. His purpose is for the search not to stop, no matter what the process issues are. He asked the ambassador for help in the sense of understanding what mechanisms are at his disposal to continue to search for his daughter, Rogério Alves told CM the lawyer who accompanied Madeleines father to the embassy yesterday.

Clarence Mitchell, the couples spokesman, also confirmed that the McCanns intention is to find the child. Gerry and Kate continue to search for Madeleine and they don't intend to give up. This visit to Portugal is part of the strategy that we have to continue that search. I assert that during this visit, Gerry had no encounter with policemen, the Attorney General or members of the government. He just went to meet his lawyer.

Details

Events in Portugal The McCanns are preparing a series of events for the media, mainly the Portuguese, not to forget about Madeleine. Clarence Mitchell didnt explain exactly what initiatives are foreseen.

Fund with money Clarence Mitchell asserts that the fund to search the child continues to have money. We have 800 thousand pounds, which is 880.170,36 euros. We dont have money problems. People continue to help us, he stated.

Its painful to return to Praia da Luz: Gerald Patrick McCann, Madeleines father

Correio da Manhã What did you come to do in Portugal?

Gerry McCann I came exclusively to speak with my lawyers to define strategies and to analyse other possibilities to continue to search for Madeleine.

- Is this a short visit? Did you come alone?

- It's a short visit, but I'm counting on making others. I arrived this morning [yesterday] and I leave tomorrow morning [today]. I didn't come alone. I came with an English lawyer who has been working with Rogério Alves in the process.

- Do you plan to visit the Algarve, Praia da Luz?

- Maybe. I don't know, its painful to think about that.

- Are you preparing anything for Madeleine's birthday, in May, which coincides with the two years of her disappearance?

- We are preparing many things, but I hope to find my daughter before that date arrives.

- Have you read the process yet?

- No. It's too long. There are approximately ten thousand pages. We are finishing the translation. I hope to read everything until February. Kate has also been helping with that analysis and she reads as it gets translated.

- What exactly are you looking for?

- We are going to analyse if in fact everything was done to find Madeleine. If the authorities acted correctly. And, more importantly, to find out if there is any lead that we can explore.

Book in England before summer

The book by Gonçalo Amaral, the former PJ coordinator who directed the investigations into the little girls disappearance, should be launched in the English market before the summer. We already have a reliable translation of the book into English. We are negotiating with several editors, whose lawyers are analysing the book. The couple's spokesman has been threatening with lawsuits since the beginning, but they've had plenty of time to read The Truth of the Lie.

If there was anything that would give them a motive to sue us, I believe they would have done that by now, CM was told by Mário Sena Lopes, who guaranteed that the English version will be identical to the one that was sold in our country.

The book reaches the same conclusions that the investigators did. Are they going to sue the investigators over that? The book is based on an investigation. We are not going to authorise any change that alters the fundamental contents of the book.

Notes

Threat: English book. Clarence Mitchell threatens to sue Gonçalo Amaral. if he publishes the book in England he'd better be aware that the British legislation is different from the Portuguese, he says.

Hotel: D. Pedro Palace. Gerry McCann was lodged at the D. Pedro Palace, in Amoreiras, a hotel that is relatively close to lawyer Rogério Alves office.

Kate: Stayed with the children. Gerry guarantees that Kate stayed with their children Sean and Amelie, and therefore didn't accompany him in the return to Portugal. She's trying to deal with all of this, he stated.

Process will only be reopened if "new, credible and revenat facts" appear - AG

Lisbon, Jan 14 (Lusa) – The Attorney General’s Office (PGR) has stated today that the process concerning the disappearance of Madeleine McCann in the Algarve will only be reopened if “new, credible and relevant facts” appear, in a reaction to the child father’s statements.

On Tuesday, Madeleine McCann’s father expressed the intention to cooperate with the Portuguese authorities in the process of the search for his daughter, who disappeared in the Algarve in May 2007, believing that there are still steps to be taken in the investigation.

“We think that there are very good chances of Maddie still being found alive and in good health, and therefore we want the search to continue. We want to stress our wish to work with the authorities as much as possible”, Gerry McCann, who arrived in Portugal on Tuesday for a visit of only two days, stated to Lusa Agency.

When asked today to comment upon these statements from Gerry McCann, the PGR replied in writing, stating that “the process can only be reopened if new, credible and relevant facts are presented”, without adding any further observation.

In an interview to Lusa, Madeleine McCann’s father says he returned to Portugal now, for the first time after September 2007, to discuss with his lawyer, Rogério Alves, the best manner in which to cooperate with the Portuguese authorities in the sense of “exploring steps that have not been taken yet and which may make a difference”.

For that, he advanced, it’s important to analyse the process and the entire investigation that was developed until now “in order not to duplicate steps that have been taken already” and also “not to waste resources”.

Madeleine McCann, then aged three, disappeared on the 3rd of May 2007 from the bedroom where she was sleeping with her younger twin siblings, in an apartment at the “Ocean Club” tourist resort, in Praia da Luz, Lagos, in the Algarve.

Her parents, both doctors (the father is a cardiologist, the mother a general practitioner), were dining at that time with a group of English friends at a restaurant within the resort, located at approximately 50 metres from the apartment.

On the 14th of May 2007, Anglo-Portuguese citizen Robert Murat was made an arguido in the process of the little girl’s disappearance, after being questioned at the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of the Polícia Judiciária (PJ) in Portimão.

On the 7th of September that year, the child’s mother, Kate, and the father, Gerry McCann, were also made arguidos, after another round of questioning at the CID.

The PJ initially pointed towards the possibility of abduction, but later admitted that the child was dead, but the authorities never managed to determine what actually happened to Madeleine McCann.

On the 21st of July 2008, the Attorney General’s Office officially announced the closing of the investigation and the archiving of the suspicions against Gerry and Kate McCann and Robert Murat.

The mystery of the child’s disappearance and the apparent lack of solid clues to explain what happened contributed to transform this case into one of the most media exposed processes of all times.

Fund pays for luxury hotel

Madeleine’s father and the English lawyer who accompanied him on the visit to Portugal, on Tuesday, were lodged at the D. Pedro Palace, a five-star hotel and one of the most luxurious ones in Lisbon. Everything, of course, financed by the ‘Find Madeleine’ Fund.

As far as CM was able to establish, one night at the D. Pedro, in a single room, may cost between 214 and 254 euros. This means that Gerry and the lawyer spent, at least, more than 400 euros for one night.

According to Clarence Mitchell, Madeleine’s parents’ spokesman, Gerry stayed in a single room and the hotel was chosen not for being five-star, but merely because it is located close to lawyer Rogério Alves’ office and because it is discrete. ‘We didn’t want to transform Gerry’s visit into a media show’.

Concerning the fact that the Fund payed for this, Clarence merely recalled the purpose for which it was created ‘This type of travel obviously fits into the search for Madeleine which is the Fund’s purpose. That was what it was created for and Madeleine’s parents will never use it for anything else apart from that’, he stated.

Beyond that, Mitchell guarantees that the fund to search for the child still has money: ‘We have 800 thousand pounds which are 880.170,36 euros. We don’t have money problems. People continue to help us’. The Fund, which was created in 2007, shortly after Madeleine disappeared from the resort at Praia da Luz, had two million euros at some point in time.

Details

Attorney General – The Attorney General’s Office informed yesterday that the Madeleine process will only be reopened with ‘new, credible and relevant facts’. This is the reply to Gerry, who said that he’d come to Portugal to explore the best way to cooperate with the authorities to ‘explore steps that weren’t taken yet’.

Detectives in the Algarve – The McCanns desisted of hiring agencies, but as far as CM has established, they now have a restricted group of people with a past that is linked to the police, willing to continue the investigation. The possibility of that team going to the Algarve is being evaluated.
