vanished

On 7 June, Spanish police received a phone call from a man claiming to know the whereabouts of Madeleine, using a mobile phone registered in Argentina. The call was described as "credible".

In June, Spanish investigative journalist Antonio Toscano claimed that the four-year-old was abducted by a French sex offender, as part of a Europe-wide paedophile network. Then, on 28 June, Toscano claimed that Madeleine was alive and well in Europe but Madeleine's parents refused to meet with him. Determined to leave no stone unturned, police also examined hundreds of reports from psychics and clairvoyants claiming to know the location of Madeleine. The police said that they decided to check them all in case they might contain a message from the kidnapper.

The investigation was thrown into confusion on 10 June when the detective coordinating the hunt, Gonçalo Amaral, head of the regional Polícia Judiciária, and four other Portuguese police officers, were charged with alleged offences relating to the inquiry into the disappearance of Joana Cipriano, from a village seven miles (11 km) from where Madeleine disappeared.

Process will only be reopened if "new, credible and revenat facts" appear - AG

Lisbon, Jan 14 (Lusa) The Attorney Generals Office (PGR) has stated today that the process concerning the disappearance of Madeleine McCann in the Algarve will only be reopened if new, credible and relevant facts appear, in a reaction to the child fathers statements.

On Tuesday, Madeleine McCanns father expressed the intention to cooperate with the Portuguese authorities in the process of the search for his daughter, who disappeared in the Algarve in May 2007, believing that there are still steps to be taken in the investigation.

We think that there are very good chances of Maddie still being found alive and in good health, and therefore we want the search to continue. We want to stress our wish to work with the authorities as much as possible, Gerry McCann, who arrived in Portugal on Tuesday for a visit of only two days, stated to Lusa Agency.

When asked today to comment upon these statements from Gerry McCann, the PGR replied in writing, stating that the process can only be reopened if new, credible and relevant facts are presented, without adding any further observation.

In an interview to Lusa, Madeleine McCanns father says he returned to Portugal now, for the first time after September 2007, to discuss with his lawyer, Rogério Alves, the best manner in which to cooperate with the Portuguese authorities in the sense of exploring steps that have not been taken yet and which may make a difference.

For that, he advanced, its important to analyse the process and the entire investigation that was developed until now in order not to duplicate steps that have been taken already and also not to waste resources.

Madeleine McCann, then aged three, disappeared on the 3rd of May 2007 from the bedroom where she was sleeping with her younger twin siblings, in an apartment at the Ocean Club tourist resort, in Praia da Luz, Lagos, in the Algarve.

Her parents, both doctors (the father is a cardiologist, the mother a general practitioner), were dining at that time with a group of English friends at a restaurant within the resort, located at approximately 50 metres from the apartment.

On the 14th of May 2007, Anglo-Portuguese citizen Robert Murat was made an arguido in the process of the little girls disappearance, after being questioned at the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of the Polícia Judiciária (PJ) in Portimão.

On the 7th of September that year, the childs mother, Kate, and the father, Gerry McCann, were also made arguidos, after another round of questioning at the CID.

The PJ initially pointed towards the possibility of abduction, but later admitted that the child was dead, but the authorities never managed to determine what actually happened to Madeleine McCann.

On the 21st of July 2008, the Attorney Generals Office officially announced the closing of the investigation and the archiving of the suspicions against Gerry and Kate McCann and Robert Murat.

The mystery of the childs disappearance and the apparent lack of solid clues to explain what happened contributed to transform this case into one of the most media exposed processes of all times.

McCanns resort to spies to reopen the process

The investigation into the disappearance of Maddie is not finished. The McCanns have hired former secret agents to arrange for new evidence and to force the Portuguese authorities to continue the inquiry

The McCann couple wants the Portuguese authorities to resume the investigations into the disappearance of Madeleine. The case has been archived already, but according to 24Horas, the little girl’s parents believe that it’s still possible to find her, and that for that to happen the case really has to be reopened.

In order to intensify the searches for Maddie, the McCanns have announced the hiring of a reinforced team of private detectives. It includes, among others, former agents of the most specialised police forces in Great Britain, namely prominent former elements of the powerful M15 and M16 [sic], the best secret services of British espionage.

“We want new clues that may indicate the child’s whereabouts to be studied. I’m not going to advance any specifics, but I can say that there is new data that may be important”, Clarence Mitchell, the McCann family’s spokesman, asserted 24Horas.

A source at the Polícia Judiciária guaranteed to the newspaper that until now “no new relevant piece of evidence” about Maddie has been received. But the door is not closed on a new police intervention.

“That really can happen. But it has to be taken into account that for the inquiry to be restarted we have to receive new facts that lead us to understand that it’s really useful to restart it”, the same PJ source explained.

A millionaire at their disposal

Scotsman Brian Kennedy has been the McCann couple’s financial guardian angel. This multimillionaire is responsible for the recent money injections in the increasingly empty Fund for Madeleine, which is composed of donations from anonymous members of the public and has been receiving increasingly less contributions.

Brian Kennedy, aged 47, has supported Kate and Gerry since the first hour. Accodring to 24Horas, he even went as far as considering the suspicions that fell on the McCanns concerning their eventual guilt in the disappearance of the child to be “incredible and torturing”.

Therefore, it has truly been Kennedy’s benevolence that has permitted to proceed with the private investigations in the search of the McCanns’ eldest daughter, who disappeared in the Algarve on the 3rd of May 2007.

Madeleine Mum can't face return

ALGARVE

Heartbroken Kate McCann was too upset to go back to Portugal where her beloved Madeleine was snatched.

She couldn't face joining husband Gerry on a recent trip to the Algarve to revive the hunt for their missing daughter.

During his 24-hour visit Gerry, 40, met Portuguese lawyers and UK embassy officials in Lisbon.

A family source said: "At this moment, Kate doesn't feel strong enough. She is still too distressed to go anywhere near where Madeleine was taken."

Kate, 40, stayed at home in Rothley, Leics, looking after the couple's twins. Maddy was nearly four when she went missing from an apartment in Praia da Luz in May 2007.

Justice for Madeleine McCann: Grenville Green promotes "60 Reasons"

Madeleine Foundation supporter Grenville Green, from Nottingham, taking news of the booklet: 'What Really Happened to Madeleine McCann?' to residents and shopkeepers in Nottinghamshire and Leicestershire.

After reading the booklet over the Christmas holidays, and being convinced that Madeleine McCann was not abducted as the McCanns have claimed, Grenville bought 100 booklets from the Madeleine Foundation. He has been touring Nottinghamshire and Leicestershire on his Triumph Bonneville America bike to promote the booklet. Amongst the places he has visted have been Leicestershire Police Headquarters and the McCanns' home village of Rothley.

Grenville said: "My wife and I have had a very good response wherever we've been. Most people appear to doubt the McCanns' version of events and have eagerly snapped up the booklet.
I am amazed at the amount of govenrment help that this couple has had, given that the Portuguese police had good grounds for making them suspects in the disappearance of their own daughter".

Biography: Grenville Green (59) was widowed and brought up three boys, including his Downs Syndrome son Stephen, on his own. He remarried in May last year and currently campaigns for carers' rights. In particular he is asking that the Carers' Allowance, paid by the government to full-time carers, should be increased to the same level as the national minimum wage.

HOW MUCH HAS AGGRESSIVE PHILOMENA MCCANN BEEN A PART OF A DISASTROUS CAMPAIGN BY THE MCCANNS?

Going back in time I remember confusion from Police reports that it seemed the McCanns were being investigated into not just homicide but kidnapping as well. I increasingly have a feeling of what may have gone on here..and the Police's real need to try and recover Madeleine, that had to be the priority..Interpol, CEOP, SOCA, you name it. Charging Kate and Gerry could be put on hold, she has always come first I think!

Police are reported to "know the truth" and believe Maddie may have been taken for sexual motive on 6.5.07:

Guilhermino Encarnacao, director of the judicial police in the Faro region, hinted there may be a sexual motive. "Kidnapping is not just for money but can be for sexual abuse,' he said.

But his belief Madeleine is still alive and his disclosure that he has witnesses brought a delighted response from the girl's family.

Her aunt, Philomena McCann, said: "It's more than hope, it's a distinct feeling of elation. But it's important to keep your emotions in check because the last couple of days have been like a rollercoaster. It's great to have some hope but we need something to happen. We want her back."

Police: We know who took Maddy (This is London. 12:22pm on 06.05.07)

Sometimes we can see a real red mist rising in the piece below, Gerry asked her to restrain herself, but hey "the gloves are off"..There are some pretty heavy adjectives/ phrases going on here! Have we been looking at these for a long time, ever since about September 2007 in fact? Ok Gez I will not speak out on TV or anything again, but, the gloves are really off and I am livid, how dare they say such things about ma wee brother! These Rosiepops character who likes to brag she is so in the know, yes I think you are Rosie/Preshy.

PS If it helps, I am not too keen on you either!

Philomena McCann (Madelines Aunt) Speaks On This Morning

September 8th, 2007 by Lisa McGarry.

In light of the shocking revelations that Kate McCann, mother of missing child Madeline McCann had been named as a suspect in the case, Madeline’s aunt yesterday spoke to Phillip Schofield and Ruth on yesterdays This Morning show on ITV1.

Ruth: “Only a week or so ago, you were in here talking to us and so much has happened in such a short space of time. I know that you’ve spoken to Kate this morning, 11 hours she was at the station answering questions, how is she this morning?”

Philomena: “She’s completely outraged, just like the rest of the family. It’s inconceivable what’s happening to them out there. There they are, they’re victims of this horrendous crime and now they’re trying to sully their name in this disgusting manner with this smear campaign. It’s just unbelievable.”

Ruth: “I know that during the news reports we’ve been seeing in the last couple of days it has been stressed that they are being questioned as witnesses not suspects. Is that still the case Philomena?”

Philomena: “Not that I am aware of, no. As far as I know they’ve changed their status and they are suspects. And I do know that some of the things that Kate has been asked are just incomprehensible. It’s just the most shocking news ever.”

Phillip: “We’re confused because we’ve been waiting all week, in fact for longer then that, for this piece of forensic evidence which was supposed to throw the case wide open and certainly shed some light on the areas we haven’t understood in the past. This is not what we were expecting, certainly not what you were expecting. Has there been anything mentioned to you about this forensic evidence we were supposed to be hearing about?”

Philomena: “Yes, there has been things mentioned, it’s about body fluids being on the family’s clothes. I’m not sure exactly, I don’t know in-depth details. Some of it seems to me more then a little ludicrous. Of course there would be Madeline’s fluids on their clothes, they pick her up. She’s a little girl who get’s hugged and lifted. How does that change their status? As far as I can see all they’re trying to do is fit Kate and Gerry up now because they haven’t found this perpetrator, who’s wandering about completely free to act as he pleases and possibly do that again. But at this time Kate and Gerry’s names are just being totally sullied.”

Phillip: “Does this mean that they are now formal suspects? Am I correct in saying they have moved up to this ‘arguido’ status?”

Philomena: “Yes that’s true”

Phillip: “Does that offer them any other protection that they didn’t have before?”

Philomena: “The only protection it offers is that they’re allowed to take legal representation in with then when they’re being questioned by the police and the other thing that it does is that allows them not to answer questions in case they incriminate themselves. But that’s not what Kate and Gerry want to do. (OH REALLY!) The police are trying to suggest that Kate has in some way accidentally killed Madeline. How ludicrous is that when one of their friends actually saw Madeline being carried up the street but some unknown assailant?”

Ruth: “How much was Kate actually allowed to tell you? What kind of things did they ask her that’s made her now feel that they think she is a suspect in this?”

Philomena: “They were saying ‘Tell us what you did with her?” Kate’s like ‘You must be insane to think we’d put ourselves through this’. It’s just nonsense.”

Phillip: “The relationship between your family and the police, up until now, has appeared to be very good. They’re been frustration and certainly a discussion that mistakes have been made but that aside you do seem to have had a good relationship with the police.”

Philomena: “My brother’s telling me, do not antagonise these people. The enquiry is in their hands, we have to work with these people, they are our best hope. You have to be very political with what you say about them buy hey the gloves are off, these people are imbeciles.”

Ruth: “Is it right that Gerry is being questioned separately today?”

Philomena: “He’s going in at 2pm today. But he’s not the main suspect, for some unknown reason there’s something about a sniffer dog sniffing Kate. Suddenly a dog can talk and says she smelled a death. How can that be when a British sniffer dog came out months after Madeline’s case. They’re doctors, if there’s a smell of death on them could that possibly be a patient?”

Philomena: “You can imagine how low they feel about they with this, and yet there’s this adrenaline pumping through them because at the end of the day all the time they’re treating Kate and Gerry as suspects, the perpetrator is out there laughing that they’ve got away with this.”

Ruth: “How much do you think these recent developments will affect your campaign now?”

Philomena: “I think with out a doubt they’ll be a large number of people who think mud sticks. Whatever they say this has been covered by every news channel. It’s all those adages, ‘there’s no smoke without fire’. Well it depends where that smoke’s coming from and I think that smoke is just a smokescreen.”

Phillip: “Philomena, we’ll leave it there for the moment, all of us with our mouths wide open with shock and maybe we could speak to you again on Monday after the weekend and you could give us another update.”

Philomena: “Can I just tell the whole audience out there. This is a complete fabrication. Gerry and Kate have got nothing to with the disappearance of their daughter. It has been them pushing this investigation from day one. It is just not true.”

Ex-Maddie cop runs for mayor

Gonçalo Amaralo, former detective in the Madeleine McCann disappearance case and author of the controversial book Maddie: The Truth about the Lie has confirmed he is set to run for Mayor of Olhão, representing social-democratic party PSD/Algarve.

The former Chief Inspector has also said he already has architectural projects in the pipeline, though his priority is to combat the chronic unemployment that is affecting the region.

Better known for his roles in the Madeline McCann and Joana cases two children, one British, one Portuguese, both of whom disappeared in separate incidents in the Algarve ex-police officer Gonçalo Amaralo said his most recent challenge is the result of my availability and an invitation that was made by PSD/Algarve and the local municipality.

He said the time has come to offer support, to intervene and not stay sitting at home. I will once again be serving people, but this time with a different function.

As Olhão is the countrys fourth city with the most unemployed citizens, the ex-cop has decided tackling unemployment would be his first mission.

Tavira Mayor of twelve years Macário Correia has voiced his approval of Sr. Amarals nomination, considering it positive, that the PSD party has found a candidate that has a strong civic participation and who has fought for justice.

Now 48 years old, Gonçalo Amaral joined the PJ police force in 1981, studying sociology, psychology, psychiatry and Criminal Investigation at the Lisbon police school.

This was followed by a course in law and a 17-year career with the PJ force culminating as chief inspector, in 1998, before controversially retiring under much speculation during the Madeleine McCann investigation, of which he was the original case coordinator.

Kate Plans a return to Portugal

Kate McCann is preparing to make an emotional trip to Portugal in a new effort to find her missing daughter Madeleine.

She has not been there since September 2007, four months after Madeleine vanished from the family’s holiday apartment in the resort of Praia da Luz.

Kate, husband Gerry and their twins, Sean and Amelie, flew home to Leicestershire after being made arguidos by the Portuguese police.

That status was lifted in July last year as detectives in Portugal effectively shelved the investigation. However, a team of former top British police officers, financed by a family friend, is now investigating the case.

Last week Gerry flew to Portugal to meet the family’s lawyer and to get an update on the work being carried out by the British team. He is said to have found the trip very useful.

Madeleine vanished nine days short of her fourth birthday.[/b]

District Social Democrat from Faro approves name of Gonçalo Amaral

Hoje às 10:16

The Social Democrat district of Faro adopted the name of Gonçalo Amaral candidate for the City of Olhão by a large majority. However, the name of the former inspector of the Judicial Police is the approval of the leader of the PSD, Manuela Ferreira Leite.

The name of Gonçalo Amaral was approved by a large majority of the elements in the district of Faro

Although the Social Democrat leader do not welcome this application, the district of Faro said that the PSD Gonçalo Amaral reformed to June 30 and which will take office after one year and four months on the leaving the Civil Service and Justice.

The policy committee also noted that the district curriculum valuable and brilliant from the former inspector, who is the party militants since May 2002, where not even deserted despite the less good moments of the Social Democrats.

A week ago, the president of the PSD has rejected the candidacy of former inspector for having recently left a position in court and that there could not be promiscuity among this sector of society and politics.

Public Opinion was Manipulated in the Maddie Case

"The most natural thing is that a person who has had a child, a dear one, anyone missing, prefers to be surrounded by policemen and persons who technically help them to search, and not to look, for example, for a priest and right afterwards an image advisor. These are basic, fundamental issues. This worry (by the McCanns) leads us to think a very fundamental thing: beyond the possible disappearance, there were other accessory preoccupations and those become preponderant"

Examination suspends PJ trial

Inspector who investigated the Maddie case stands accused of torture

Tavares de Almeida requested new exams from the court. The inspector fails to understand how the man who accuses him didn't complain about pain in front of the judge

by Sónia Simões

The trial of PJ inspector Tavares de Almeida, who investigated the Maddie case and stands accused of torturing a railway worker, has been suspended because of a medical exam.

The case dates back to 2000, had been archived, but was reopened and arrived before the court in December, according to what 24Horas was able to establish.

Inspector Tavares de Almeida - Gonçalo Amaral's right arm - and his two colleagues, Alves da Cunha and Diamantino dos Santos, stand accused of a crime of torture. The plaintiff, Virgolino Neves, says that he was beaten during interrogation merely to confess that he had been the author of a theft at his workplace, the CP [Portuguese Rail Company].

Nine years after the complaint, inspector Tavares de Almeida requested a new exam. He wants to understand why in the forensics medical exam the emergency chart from Amadora Sintra Hospital - where the victim was assisted - doesn't mention the fracture that was diagnosed, one month later, by a private doctor. Why four months after this exam, the traces that were left by the fracture are located on other ribs.

Victim without complaints

Therefore, the inspector has requested a new examination, to be carried out through a complete forensic medical exam, that will inspect the x-rays that were made at the hospital.

The judges at the 3rd Criminal Court have replied to the request in late December, and understood that the performance of a new examination is not justified, after such a long time. Nevertheless, they accepted part of the inspector's request, and decided to request the Institute of Forensics Medicine to complete the evaluation of the physical damage and to give clarification concerning the lesions.

The experts are to clarify whether or not the lesions that the victim says to have suffered, allowed for him to stand before an instruction judge for 45 minutes without complaining about any pain.

Railway worker Virgolino Neves complains about having been beaten with a wooden board during interrogation. But he only filed the complaint after a judge released him, on the next day. He says he did that out of fear. The inspectors deny any aggression.

Facts

Session. The first session of the trial of the three PJ inspectors had been scheduled for December, but was postponed without a set date due to the request that was interposed by inspector Tavares de Almeida.

Archived. The torture accusation had been archived, but a new testimony altered the situation: a guard from the prison that is located next to the PJ asserts that Virgolino Neves asked for the services of a nurse during the night that he was kept in prison.

2000. The questioning took place in March 2000, when Virgolino was questioned by the PJ due to a theft that had occurred at his workplace. The railway worker denied.
